I'm a freelancer and just had to knock back a job today. The guy wanted more for the money than what i gave him a quote for.
Anyway, i got a bad vibe off him and my gut told me not to take the job on.
I'm telling you though, people/clients want things done for fuck all these days.

...and you can find most of them posting on craigslist.

You know that saying, you can judge a person by how they treat waitstaff? Take em out to lunch. You'll learn a lot for $40.
Never failed for me. Make them drive too, if they drive like an asshole, then steer clear.
And if they say they can't do that, then it's probably not worth working for them.

Good luck, you need to balance paying the bills with being reallistic. It's the hardest thing in the world to turn down a paying job when you're self employed but sometimes you've just got to say to them that they're taking the piss.
You wouldn't expect an accountant to work for $6/hr so I don't know why people still think skilled creatives would do.

Totally know how that goes. I've been in some hell projects where the client has walked all over me... it is the worst feeling.
Good for you! Sometimes it just isn't worth it.
