...which further echos my point about there just being fewer and fewer "kickass portfolios" and a lull in the fresh talent that's available
wouldn't you agree mr. seminole?
and yes, rob is one cool dude!

...well the Thread Title DOES say "FWA" :)
Anyway, so back to the point of there "not being any kick-ass portfolio sites out there anymore".
Says who? :)
I personally have gone the 1pager route like the good little DesignWhore I am -- but I did it because I believe in that model.
You know. Just show the effing work in a simple way so that normal people (i.e. not us) can just see the work and let it speak for itself.
I personally find making "kick-ass portffolio sites" EXTREMELY HARD, because we, as designers, have NO product and NO brand to sell and communicate. With leaves me feeling stupid for wasting sooo much time showing off for now REAL REASON.
I'd rather work on a "kick-ass" site for a client with something tangible...than try to create one of those "totally immersive interactive universe" just to show people my 6 best projects.
:)
Some might think that's silly...
I think alot of people see it that way now...and after you've been in a meeting. And in one case had the 100% SUPERFLASH SITE, and the other, a simpler 1pager, you will see that the simpler method works best.
At least it has for me...
"Yes sir, no just scroll down...yep that site I did for...ahhmmm, yep thanks, that one there is for...that one is in Flash...."
You get the idea :)

AMEN! Toxic AMEN!
- gabe0
agreed toxic, and pretty much the point i was getting at...
those who are capable of producing those types of sites are too busy getting paid to do it for their clients
- gabe0
btw toxic, noticed you're in LA.
are you working anywhere at the moment? open to considering fulltime or freelance opportunties? :)
- ToxicDesign0
Gabe I'd follow you anywhere :)
Was in LA --- I'm in Europe right now (family), be Stateside in March...going to SXSW in Austin...then back to LA.
I still have my laptop with me though! Feel free to email whatever/whenever -- you little rockstar you! I'm always available.

I agree Gabe. Total lack of skilled people out there right now.
Everyeone calls themselves a designer though but few people out there to actually do the buildouts and good work to make a good idea a great idea.
Any assclown can come up with a concept. It's executing it that makes you good at what you do.
- gabe0
haha, sounds good toxic. going to shoot you an e-mail...

I think Gabby Johnson is right!
Rarrit!
(Any Blazing Saddles fans in the house?)
Sorry.

Where are all the white women at?

speaking of FWA I am personally looking for some decent talented flash developers, PHP programmers and some creative folk to join our team here at Firstborn.
We are doing some really exciting things now and are looking to grow the team here in Hells Kitchen.
Anyone who has a kick ass one pager OR a killer site to show off send me an email...
- craigeli0
anyone ever get one of those cool t-shirts from Rob? i found it funny that this thread took place today and for some strange reason im wearing an FWA t-shirt... i didnt start the thread... promise..
- ToxicDesign0
This is why I still love NT.
Now, Firstborn is here! :)
Yes Craig, I know you guys do beautiful work. Bookmark my 1pager :)
And Gabe --> thanks.
- ToxicDesign0
Okay, so going back to the whole "Portfolio Stuff".
The other point I want to raise is WE versus I concept.
You know, either you have a portfolio website that says "we are this and we do that" (when it's only one bloke), or the transparent individualist approach.
So many of us feel the need to act bigger than we really are. I've had issues with that myself.
hmmmm...
- ToxicDesign0
Nope, no FWA tshirt for me!
I only got an effing wallpaper! :)
- smielke0
I agree with you Toxic on the WE vs I. Always makes me laugh.
I have an FWA shirt but it's in the laundry. :(
- craigeli0
Yep Firstborn is representing on NT.
Trying to round me up some real developers who want to work on some killer projects.
Thanks for the compliment, we try our best.
I need some good flash devs and some PHP pros to join the staff.
FWA's for everyone...
- jpea0
would i get an fwa t-shirt if i applied?
;)
no, really. any chance of that?
- craigeli0
you can have the one i am wearing... although i just got back from a haircut and its a bit itchy...
- xhilarate0
I absolutely agree with you!
1) FWA: ran by a 20 something boy from the UK, not even a designer, generally like corporate sites, auto sites and everything that group94 does.
He probably has stock in the company?2) I have also noticed most web designers / graphic designers today use a "Wordpress and or Blogger" templates to post their own work, very creative, NOT!
