Well, what's the answer? And why?
I'm used to PCs but am up for a change. What's the fuss about macs?

with an imac 20" you will instantly get laid 30% more than if you were to buy a pc.

hmm, I got married last July. PC it is then?

VISTA blows. That's reason enough to change.
I've been seriously considering a 24" iMac because you can do so much so easily on it. And, if you're a PC guy you can of course run Windows on it at the same time so you can use the programs you already have.
And, Gizmodo just released a video of Microsoft's Origami pack running on a brand spankin new blazing fast PC... which it killed the PC. No thanks.

Oh, and as always, if you do buy the iMac check the deal section on the Apple store page first cause you'll save a bunch over new.

So this sounds stupid but...I have a pc with software on it. Can I use the same software on a windows mac or do I need the mac version of the software?

or the eductaion and save 15%

if you buy a pc, you will unevolve to a more primitive state, something similar to new world primates

If you're doing anything related to web design/development, stay far away from Macs.
- Atkinson0
Whys that?

go with the Imac Craig.
you won't regret it, especially if you can get the edu discount.I have that machine and it's lush, ultra quiet too.

You can run existing windows programs on an Intel Mac if you have parallels software or download bootcamp. You will then need an official copy of windows to install.
I've just switched to a Mac but to be honest I'm running win XP on it most of the time since I only have CS2 etc for win not MAC. The MAC OS is better than win (IMO) and once you get used to it is less painful to live with. In fact having both on the same machine gives a nice back to back comparison. This is my second attempt to switch to MACs - first time it was just crap and I returned to windows. If you're doing web development/design win is slightly better since that is probably the environment 90% of the rest of the world will view your sites on. I think flash is better in windows too. Having said that I have the fastest MACBOOK I could afford with 3gb RAM and flash seems fine on that too.
Go Mac, buy windows and play with both!

Ahem. Bootcamp is unreliable.
A coder colleague was putting together a Java preloader in an AJAX style. It worked under bootcamp and crashed true winXP and Linux.
In all honesty, if you can't be happy with whatever computer is in front of you you're a fucking tard.
You can't trust the opinion of a Mac head or a PC head because one is a tosser and the other is just an idiot.
Just walk into the shop and buy whichever one you like the most at the time. It won't make a difference.
- Atkinson0
st33d I agree, my pc is ok but I keep hearing voices that whisper 'buy a mac...buy a mac', kind of like a breeze in the woods at night, if you know what I mean. Anyone else get that? Also if I went into a shop to buy something I'd come out empoty handed because I'm a tight git, it'd take me at least 12 months to get the bottle to spend that kind of money on something white and plastic.

(Feb 6 07, 03:08)and you can't trust this guy's opinion because he's obviously a moron

i'll follow up my last post so you don't think i'm just a troll. your statement shows that you have a complete non understanding of what bootcamp actually is. lol @ "true" win xp and linux. when you boot into those OS's, what do you think you are running? if i were to just install linux on a macbook and only boot into that, is that now "true" linux because i didn't use bootcamp to boot into it? your friend is probably not a very good coder if it crashes every platform he tries his code on. or more likely java is the culprit because it's a big wet stinky dog. first time i've heard a condemnation of something because it actually works. ha.

Yeah, Atkinson, buy whatever you're used to and have the software for.
I started out a PC guy 10 years ago, switched to a Mac, never looked back and then, over the last 2 years, have had to design on PC's at work but still design exclusively on my Mac at home.
I run both systems really clean...meaning, I don't install b.s. freeware or crap shareware on either machine....I run the programs I need for work and that's about it.
My opinion is this...
I've worked on 2 different PC's over the last 2 years at 2 different jobs....one was an older, kind of crappier machine and my current work PC is really solid bought brand spankin' new a few months ago. My Mac at home is a brand new 24" iMac that I got back in September pretty much right after they announced them.
Running the same applications on both machines (essentially just adobe stuff...including the last batch of macromedia) my PC has crashed about twice as much as my Mac. My Mac has frozen up and I've had to force quit shit every now and again....so it ain't all roses on the Mac side....but, honestly, I had a crash on my new PC here at work 2 weeks after I started and it's now a once a week thing.
But, in the end, it's kind of the same shit....they both have their problems and they both crash but, in my personal experience, my Mac has crashed about half as much as my PC running the same exact programs.
The other thing is that shit always just seems to work on my Mac. Plug it in and it works, turn it on and it works, install it and it works. I almost always have to do some "jump through hoops" bullshit at some point in the process to get stuff to work on my PC.
Just my 2 cents. Go with what you can afford and since you already have every bit of software for the PC then I would say stick with that.
How's that for a fair and balanced review from a self-admitted Mac guy.
P.S. - This isn't really related, but sort of....I think the iPhone is a piece of shit and I'm pissed that Mac seems to be forgetting what they're built on. Pfhew...just had to get that out of my system.

its not what you use but what you produce

the debate is over, but what is the answer?

The project actually works thank you acescence. Thanks to cross-platform testing on non-Mac computers. It didn't crash on a Mac, didn't you read my post?
I wasn't hating on just Macs. I hate all operating systems. I've used all operating systems. My point was that you should just trust your instincts when you walk into a shop.
Not some reactionary twat who gets all snotty because I said that anyone who is in love with Steve Jobs is a tosser.
That isn't you is it?
