Where do designers go when they get old? This is a serious question. I don't think I've seen a designer older than 40.

Tons out there... one of them being:
However, most just become art directors and don't really design much anymore.

Most of the non-agency types open their own boutique studios, or teach, or both.

well, there's Massimo Vignelli, Adrian Shaughnessy, Wofgang Weingart, Hermann Zapf, Doyald Young, Robert Valentine, RIck Valicenti, and every college kid's fave...David Carson...just to name a few.
Some of these people act in completely or at least mostly directorial roles, some are still doing it all solo...I'd say at least 1/2 of the decent design work these days still comes from people old enough to sire most of us wee bairns here on NT.

i don't think retiring is an option for a lot of people these days. Sure won't be an option for me. Not that I mind so much...I'll just simmer down to occasional freelance and teach typography until i go blind or kick the reef.

i think its just a single generation thing... a lot 40+ got left behind in the transition to digital design and took to art direction and teaching.
