I have sent a client Pantone Coated and CMYK values for a logo. They are requesting Pantone uncoated ink #. Is there a way to find this without the uncoated book (I only have a coated set).
Thanks

why not post the colour ref and maybe someone will tell you.
- agentfour0
same number innit?
isnt the uncoated just to give a better idea of what the ink will look like on uncoated paper? or am i totally wrong here?

Good call rasko4:
Pantone Blue 072
Pantone 375 CThanks.
- Nairn0
what agentfour said - though i've always thought there's a slight perceptual difference.
i really, really hope, anyway, otherwise i've been getting it seriously wrong all these years,
- elms0
there is a slight difference between coated and uncoated in some colours.

It seems to make sense that Panton 375 C is Pantone 375 U... I just don't understand why there would be different Pantone Swatch libraries in Illustrator for the same colour swatches...
- elms0
for example PMS warm gray 6U maches better with PMS 7C
- elms0
"PMS warm gray 7C
doh
- elms0
would like to help out, but the coated book has gone missing...

DONT EVER ASSUME that they'll match with a straight number crossover from coated to uncoated. certain color ranges, like yellows or golds can look totally different.
it's worth the effort of tracking down both books, getting under some bright white light, and doing an optical comparison.

dudes, you are all very helpful and all, but what they guy is asking for is the CMYK values, so if you have the book read that shit out.

convert the pms to cmyk in InDesign or whatnot

rasko - "They are requesting Pantone uncoated ink #. Is there a way to find this without the uncoated book (I only have a coated set)."
And yes, as Rand says, check in-software if you do need the CMYK values.
My swatchbook has a key for colours 'achievable in CMYK' - it doesn't have that key for the green you've suggested, but that's only (i imagine for absolute exactness)

C: 41 M: 78 Y: 0 K: 0
HTML: #96FF38
Pantone: 375
Is what I have.

Haha, also green despite what I swear reading earlier was told to be bleu.

Thanks all.
Nairn - this is exactly what I was thinking / looking for. Now I just need to track down an uncoated book...

Remember that a crisp pms color like 375 c really can't be reproduced in cmyk. If you really want the color to work on every medium try an other color. (check the pms colorbridge swatchbook).
Also think about future applications
you'll see that most ececutions require a good cmyk build up.

that's strange, i just sent a job to print using 375U. cosmic. and the coated equivalent definitely looks lighter, btw.

hope you realize that illustrator, indesign and photoshop can all give different CMYK conversions for the same pantone color . . .
and yes, certain pantone colors looks COMPLETELY different depending on whether the ink mix is printed on coated or uncoated stock. All software conversion are approximations and some are worse than others.
only way to really test is to make up a bunch of color swatches with diffferent cmyk variations close to what you suspect might be a starting point, and decide from that output. (If close enough is good enough, however, go with the software conversions.)
