I think you give them too much credit. It looks like the tried to incorporate several letter 'Z's to create a shape...

the amount of PVN approval for a given logo has an inverse relationship to the size of the related company - especially if said company is a faceless corporate behemoth like Microsoft.
I think if this logo was created by someone in the PVN - everyone would be like “RAD LOGO!”

i can imagine it being polished metalic laid into the back of a black one. did that make sence? but other than that im not too crazy about it.

I pretty much guarantee that if the product was as cool as it's supposed to be: To be that, it needs to be:
A. Smaller
B. Make wifi syncing one button
C. maybe broadcast the stream you're playing and swap a song for a song keeping it somewhat balanced.
D. And the Name, Zune, seems kinda like... Zuni? Old. Ancient... Not progressive because who uses the letter Z in anything anymore?Overall, not much thought went into it. The logo reflects this perfectly and it therefore fits.

Do you folks really hate it or just hate it because it's popular to do so? I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just curious as to how many of you are being totally honest.
I can't think of a single time I've seen a corporate logo discussion/crit on here where anyone's had anything positive to say.

Take the type away and you have a memorable logomark. That actually looks kinda nice. IMO.
