These guys have been advertising for staff for over a year now. They've either got a huge turnover or are really picky. Has anybody heard anything about them?

could be high turnover. Maybe it's an ILM type thing, where people work their for peanuts just to put it on the resume/CV then move on.

considering they make you take a "design test" before they interview you, i assume that puts a lot of people off.

cool... sounds good... when i did my art foundation i had to take a maths test coz everyone was lumped in the same test area... was ridiculously easy... they said you cam really high on that... but said to them, i'm not really there for that!
foundation was the biggest waste of a year ever, drawing with sticks dipped in ink... bloody crusties!

Yeah I was turned off by the whole "design test." You basically have to redesign the front page of CNN or Apple.
I think they get pretty picky then after you do that.
- ********0
if you can't do that you should be there... they're not after the best design... they're after some thought process and discussion
- ********0
dont forget, they KEEP all the ideas that you come up with.
so its an easy way to get some new thinking out with paying anyone

They seem like nice people though. I bet they would pay pretty decent.

its the chance you take, its easy to think of 100 good ideas for apple or whoever, its the ability to realize them
- ********0
if they can get ideas from number of people then they have the people internally to realize them.
they can apply that idea not just for apple or cnn or whoever they use it to test on but to other clients.
interaction ideas can transfer in to other brands

so showing your portfolio wouldn't give them ideas? perhaps not?
- ********0
in most cases, what you have on your portfolio is already realized for a client.
but when you put a thought in to a design that will never realize is something else
i see it as mass design exploration
i even see it as close as 'design our logo / site' for free and your design might win, in this case, a job
- aktive0
I don't apply at firms that have job postings all the time
- ********0
if you're that precious of your ideas perhaps you shouldn't even be considering interview?
- pistollero0
yup huge turnover, most of the key people are gone.
- ********0
interviewing at FI?
for my self no.i dont trust a shop that does mass cattle call for design comp
- ********0
those helicopters overhead are worrying too aren't they?
- ********0
yes they are thats why i have my special cap on
I guess you will do some comps for FI for design test. good luck with that
- F_180
first off, if they can't tell what you're all about by looking at your portfolio, then why would they ask you to take the "test" in the first place.
second, how can you meaningfully design a homepage for apple or cnn in 2 days? if they are so huge on interaction and user experience, any "quick" designs you could fart out in a day or two wouldn't even come close to the level of detail needed to undertake projects of that scope.
so it seems pointless and trite.

do they still get you to do the test or was that something they tried like a year ago?
- F_180
they still do it.
