Dont judge a font by its name

How nice would it be if there was a plugin which would allow you to view the fonts on your system through the finder. Instead of it showing a font book icon and having to use more RAM opening font book or suitcase.
As i work off my powerbook (blessit) i dont load more font than i have to. So when i want to view a font which is out of my users fonts folder i have to open them up by double clicking on each one.

I hate that also.
Especially as I have thousands.

Where have all the tech heads done to solve this problem...

or you could use linotype's font explorer...and just deal with the small amount of memory it takes up.

extensis suitcase... kinda like fontbook.. but better

font explorer is great with the comment feature, but try cataloging a couple thousand fonts by keyword...

it's pretty easy if youre only loading fonts you need for the moment. personally, i have linotype's collection, so i use their site to browse for fonts, then when i find one, i just find it on my CD and install it.

i had 30,000 fonts before the christmas holiday. i whittled it down to about 18,000 through fontexplorer. By commenting only on fonts i liked or thought could be useful, i use smartset folders to help sort them out.
took a few days, but well worth it.
Now... my only problem is fontexplorer takes too long to do tasks.

It's becoming clear that FontExplorer is a great font explorer but not yet a production-worthy font manager.
Yes, I'm all in favor of font file previews in the Finder just like PDFs, movies, MP3s, and images. Someone dial up their favorite Mac developer.

I feel sorry for each and every one of you, truly
I think this is what you are describing
Bitstream font navigator, it came with my Corel 12 suite and a healthy amount of fonts as well. It's on my PC.
As you can see, I can sort and find within a plethora of options including format, style, vendor, etc. I can even further edit them into groups I specify, though I've never really gotten into as you can tell
Typographica, you'll notice your elbowgreaser word, thanks. I could put an entire sentence as well if you have one to suggest
Another feature not shown with these screen shots is that some faces have all the variations embedded into one font; normal, italic, bold, etc and list in on top of one another in the preview menu.
Whats nice is that the Font navigator doesn't care where the fonts are located on my system, it tracks the fonts location and does not try to organize the actual file location until it is needed to actually copy into the windows fonts folder.

Don't feel too bad, v4.
:)
You can organize fonts in a multitude of ways in font explorer too, but when you have a lot of fonts in it and in smart sets - it tends to bog down (on my system).//It might have something to do with my not-so-new computer.

oh cool, i was worried when i read such things as double clicking to preview fonts, i would have to shoot myself.
here's a more organized set of screen shots also showing the multiple variations of one font
it also has a direct link to http://myfonts.com that i can explore their fonts on my computer without using the website
this is after asking it to show me no more than 50, modern style, ttf format. There are endless options though to choose from on 3 categories including "font starts with"
