I think this is what you are describing
Bitstream font navigator, it came with my Corel 12 suite and a healthy amount of fonts as well. It's on my PC.
As you can see, I can sort and find within a plethora of options including format, style, vendor, etc. I can even further edit them into groups I specify, though I've never really gotten into as you can tell
Typographica, you'll notice your elbowgreaser word, thanks. I could put an entire sentence as well if you have one to suggest
Another feature not shown with these screen shots is that some faces have all the variations embedded into one font; normal, italic, bold, etc and list in on top of one another in the preview menu.
Whats nice is that the Font navigator doesn't care where the fonts are located on my system, it tracks the fonts location and does not try to organize the actual file location until it is needed to actually copy into the windows fonts folder.
