I have a G5, a radeon 9800 pro and 2 23inch cinema displays.
One display is connected via the dvi port the other via to the vga port (via a belkin dvi to vga convertor). Why is this monitor not showing?

i 'think' (could be wrong here) that your video card can only push to one of these ports at a time. if you hook up a split to one of them, it will recognize both of those, but to push to 2 different video signals types at samne time is outside it's range i belive.

No - I'm running a radeon 9800 on windows, with 2 displays - one DVI, one VGA.
If I remember correctly, the default setting after simply plugging the two monitors in is that they should both display copies of the same 'single source' output. You then have to use the ATi control panel ('catalyst') to specify whether you'd like to split the screen or whatever. Basically - it should just work on plug in.
Have you tried swapping the monitors around / not using the Belkin?
What does your ATi control panel report? It should spell it out to you in the 'Displays manager' option.
Sorry, that's not much use is it? :(

OK will have a look at the control panel - thnx will get back to you...

how do i access the radeon control panel?

I don't know (i'm on Windows).
On my bloody setup, I've evidently deleted the shortcut, so I have to go to Win Explorer and find it at the top of my File menu, which is entirely illogical.

go to the ATI site and look around..you might have to download some stuff...the way you have it plugged in should work fine.

In my experience, I have nearly the same set-up. I was told that because both monitors require quite a bit of power to push them. You might need two video cards.
I would suggest consulting some of the mac hardware message boards.
This info comes from the mac IT guy here at work, however you know how these IT guys like to do things.

If what fortified says is the case, you should be able to get around the problem and test your set up by forcing a lower-than-supported resolution on each monitor (say 1024x768). That way you can ensure you're not overloading your gpu memory.
That said, I'd be surprised if a Radeon 9800 couldn't (at least) support the full resolution of your two 23"-ers.

I recently got reamed with this problem. Heres what you do. Go to the apple store and tell them your issue. There's an adapter you will HAVE to get. Make sure you completely know which inputs youre talking about. Mac has been a bit finicky with their monitors/video cards

I'm all confused! - do I need to buy another adaptor or not? Do they sell it in the Apple online store?
OSX just doesn't seem to be detecting my second display.
Just to reiterate my 9800 pro has 2 outputs - one DVI female and one VGA female.
One 23 inch cinema display is plugged into the DVI and the other cinema into a Belkin DVI female to VGA male which slots into the VGA port of my 9800.
The Belkin adaptor I bought is here:
