i've been a student member for 5 years... that's up in february.
the indianapolis chapter was garbage, but NYC's is way active, so i'll probably jump on.
LGDA in lousville always had more going on than AIGA indy.

cold calling aiga members daily with 6 figure offers is clearly the norm, as MediaPimp has stated

300$ is still too much money for a pro association. If you read the benefits half of them dont apply to anyone who works for a Studio. So besides the booklets they send out, and the 15% Adobe savings what would apply?
If they changed what the definitions of their memebrships were then I think a lot more people would join. Maybe like a proprietor level and then an employee level or somthing lke that. Also, As I think this has been discussed before on here AIGA gears itself towards the print area of design more than interactive.

with a name like MediaPimp, how could you not believe him?

Seriously, is that for real? Most designers I know don't make anywhere near 100,000.
Is the portfolio/profile feature of the AIGA site really that great a tool for finding work?
I never even set it up as a student member. Maybe I was stupid.

I joined late last year (2006) and since, I've been getting calls with nice offers (6 figures being the norm) daily from very well known companies. As said before, if your work stands out, you'll receive more attention.

Yeah I was contemplating it myself... I know two of my friends have accounts and they've had offers from companies like: Burton, Jaguar, Ecko, Abercrombie & Fitch. If you have solid work you will stand out.
You should follow up if you do it! I want to but don't want to fork the cash haha.

I joined the philly chapter as a student a few years ago, and there never seemed to be much going on.
Is it any better now? It's a lot more expensive to join as a professional. I was just wondering if people think it's worth the cost.

It cost way too much for an individual.
I think.

if you have a good chapter in your area that has fun events & brings in good speakers - why not
