Working on an 11x17 poster tonight for a band I just built a site for. I have the graphics and such done (using ones from the website) and did their site for $250. It's a band, I know how it is to not have much money to throw around.
So, does $40 for just a few hours work seem totally cheap of me when I could charge that per hour, or is it OK for something that won't really take me very long and is another piece for my portfolio?

personally,i wouldn't have admitted any of that info. do whatever feels right inside, those are charity prices my friend
- Mimio0
Can they afford to barter for something more valaube than 40 dollars to better compensate you?
- formcounterform0
your work must suck if you are giving it away for free like that.
im joking
well only halfway
- OSFA0
do it in exchange for some groupies.
;)

Haha, nice - well, the site was kind of a matter of
1) Didn't take long
2) Needed something to add to my portfolio
3) There's no way they could have payed ANYONE much moreAnyhow, I only asked about the poster because I typically only do this stuff for my own band.
I guess I should approach it and think, "If me band didn't have anyone (me) to do our stuff for free, how much would I be comfortable paying someone for the same thing?"
- version30
it's an expensive world out there, no need to alert anyone to your giving nature
get at least a bill for it, how often are they going to use it? this show or every show?
- mg330
I know what you're saying version4...
It's something they'll print a large number of and reuse.

Not having much money?
Tough shit.
I get that a fucking lot from local companies and bands. And they like every other money grubbing know-it-nothing brings up, "Well this would be a great portfolio piece for you."
Will it?
Really?
Do I go to your record store and go, hey I'm only going to be paying 30% of the price of the vinyl I brought to the store clerk because I don't have much money at the present moment. But guess what, you'll get a lot of publicity from me telling people who great it felt ripping you off.
Do I go to your band when they are recording at their studio and go, hey you know what I have some shit I want to record so ... give me my studio time for basically nothing because ... I don't have much money at the present moment. But don't worry, I'll tell everyone that your studio was the best to use!
But be nice about not lifting a finger for them (but do, and I can not stress this enough buy their domain name that they want to hold over for ransom later), otherwise instead of being friends with them on their road to riches, you end up just being that guy who was the inspiration to do riches and in turn gets no benefits.

Hey man, let's put it this way.
Are you friends w/ the band? Do you like the project? You are certain that they are broke?Nothing bad to do a bit of work to help them out if you like it eough to use as portfolio. That could lead to paid work.
I could sit down and brag like oh my god you are so checp, I will never whore myself out like that for anyone, where is your pride? when that has nothing to do with this. I have done flyer works, I write for magazines I have done art shows in museums and got paid peanuts, so what? To me there is real work, and small projects like these is what keeps my job fun an exciting, don't be ashamed of what you are doing, keep it up, if you get paid to do something you love that is a bonus. I know many designer working for $120 and hour at an agency doing nothing more than bitsh work, they have little or no saying on the overall project, yes, they end up having puma / and ferrari on their portfolio but they have contributed only pawn labor.
I say do it!

If you have feelings, feel free to go Meeklo's route.
Actually, the Machiavellian way would be more beneficial than the mightier than thou way that I was kind of implying on second thought.
I find working with friends kind of leads them to believe you'll do favours for them, and in turn I was stating examples of which when you need a favour - your kindness will be completely forgotten.
I'd complain about not having enough free time to open up on my schedule to constitute working for peanuts, but then miraciously you're able to go out of your way because you believe in them so much that sleep, paying clients, having fun means nothing if you can't help them out.
That's like two favours.
Both pretty big ones, and the second one is the one they'll remember.
But be careful I guess, because then later they may think you are on board with not getting paid and always being able to make time.
It's a balancing act for sure.

only if its fun, and at that amount I wouldn't even take the money, that way they know its a big favour and they are in your debt FOREVERRRRRR
- flavorful0
"working for peanuts" is not what I meant really. I can't even remember the prices, but I just remember them being eerily similar to some of the "quotes" people have had the gall to ask me when I know they have more and are/were just trying to take advantage of my good nature.
Which I'm sure from the previous posts, no one reading this could possibly believe I have any 'good nature', haha.

(Jan 3 07, 14:12)"Brill."
If that's even what people from the UK would say.
Just if you do that, I'd tack on always being slightly late.
Just because.

Yah, pretty good stuff, kind of Springsteen-esque Americana type stuff.
Anyhow, I told em to just get me a $100 gift card to Jamba Juice, I need that more than I need $100.
- rasko40
dont forget to include some worn type, some burnt paper edges and some bullet holes.
Oh and the marlboro man, dont forget him. And more bullet holes.
