I really enjoyed that. Thanks, Patrick.

Does the fact that he's autistic give him credibility as an artist?

I feel you. But can't the simple will and desire to create and communicate define an artist as well?
I think that is part of the question raised in the film. Does "training" define an artist? Is it required?

interesting discuss ion spent2000, harlequino and Concrete.
im not sure .
the issue of credibility may be moot here , since seth, the a r tist, is incapable of understanding the concept of credibility altogether.

Perhaps you can take it even further by asking what place does "credibility" have in art? Does it distort pure creativity? Does the notion of "having credibility" discourage others (whether they are autistic or not) from creating art?
Daniel Johnston and Henry Darger are/were artists with different perceptions of reality. Does that make their work any less important?
Not sure, myself. I think the questions are more important than the answers.

I agree with you there, harlequino.
I just felt it was a bit cliché.

Weeell, Vito Acconci is often considered a 'credible' artist. And he is well known for having a wank under a ramp:

i t hink i know what u mean when u say cliche. that say, film s like rain man, or news segments on savants who cant tie their shoe but can play anyy song theyve ever heard on t,he piano from memory. cliche i think applies when one consciously chooses to say, use 45 degree arrows etc
but i think b/c seth does not choose, [he channels], earthly questions of crredibility and cliches miss the point...

Agreed, and also keep in mind that Seth is not being trotted out in front of the masses (at least that was my impression) for consumption. He is not being billed as a curiosity (like the pianist in "Shine" for example).
I think what is at the core of this type of creativity is its very fragility in its own existence as art. Were Seth's work to be displayed prominently in a gallery, or if he were to become an attraction of some sort, his work (as well as his life perhaps) would suffer and collapse by the very act of placing it under a scope.
