maybe im doing something idiotically stupid, but im trying to spill some txt in indesign from a word document, so i choose file, place, find the file, and click in my text frame i created on my master pages.
when it spills, it makes it's own three column thing or just a single one depending on where i click. how the HELL do i get it to spill inside my text frames?

try "spilling" it on your pages
NOT master pages?

yeah that's what im trying to do, cant even select the text frames i made on the master pages

file/place/click on doc-------
then cursor changes to a loaded text icon ---then click in text frame.does that work?

alice. you're turning me on.

i think you need to just copy and paste, not place

i'm not bright

yeah just copy and paste it in.. and use the "paste without formatting" command to strip off the Word columns.

doesnotexist(you don't have to have these selcted to place text)
but if you wanted to select frames on pages that have master pages applied to them use SHIFT and APPLE and then
click

(Dec 29 06, 11:03)and cmnd-shift click to override master page text frame.

okay so apple+shift clicking made the text box i made on the master pages appear on page one, but then when i shift click, so it auto flows until the end, it just spills in new text boxes i didnt make.
i dont understand this.
trying not to copy paste here if at all possible

now, after pushing apple+shift and clicking the text box to make it visible, i can place by pushing apple+d, but then i cant make it spill to fit text automatically by adding more pages....

sorry to be blunt but sounds like you should maybe read over some intro indesign tutorials.
indesign is all about building your docs efficiently, so learning a few basics now would save you a lot of time in the long run.

yes i understand that, ive been using indesign for quite some time now, which is why i have no idea why this isnt working. believe me.

no need to be sorry either! maybe i will look up a tutorial afterall. this shit's mad crazy.
thanks everyone, happy new year

it just spills into text boxes you didn't create?
wierd....
I know that if I have overridden a text box on a page
and then I shift click -the type falls into my columns that I created in the beginning.I have no problems when I just create a master page with say several text boxes and link them.
Then apply that master to say page 1
(the text boxes will not be clickable on page 1 -thats ok)Then place a file choose etc......
And shift click and the text flows into each text frame.

try copying and pasting the text from the word file into a standard .txt file THEN paste it into indesign.
sometimes formatting can be hidden in the word text.
get this problem a lot when entering text onto a website through a content management system, the word text keeps the formatting or sometimes does something strange.dont know if its the answer to your solution cos i dont use indesign, but worth a try nevertheless
