And I have to give a shout out to the first live jazz I ever saw..I was a stereotypical 80's headbanger and my band's bassist was a jazzhead, so sometime in the early 90's he dragged me down to NY's lower east side to see some live jazz...and I saw the Thomas Chapin Trio:

Still one of the most transformingly powerful gigs I have ever seen and singlehandedly turned me onto the neauty and power of the jazz form. Unfortunately Chapin died in '98 from cancer, but seek out his stuff, especially if you're a fan of 'Trane, Bird, etc...check out the "Lift Off" preview on that amazon link. His stuff is available on iTunes as well..
