Do not ask what the pixels can do for you ask what you can do for your pixels.

Even though a lot of people still don't know how to change the display settings, I think it's fairly safe to say that for the last couple of years, anyone who's bought a computer will already have it set at 1024/768 by default.
I guess it's all down to your target market though and how you want to treat them in terms of making assumptions about their viewing settings.
- Witt0
no doubt. 800 is safer. and after all, the sites who are designed for an unspecificed audience, like an e-shop or e-bank etc usually don't need such a spiffy design, so what you need to put in there goes perfectly well within 800.

Yeah Witt, I agree that 1024 is the probably the most common res, and in 'my opinion' the optimal res... but there are defo still people using 800x600 res unfortunately... and I personally don't think you can just discount those people... as they are a potential customer of your clients site just as much as the next guy with his 1024x768 screen... if you see what I mean?
- Witt0
i don't know RoomFive, but the large majority computers i see everywhere (office, schools, homes, etc) are usually set to 1024. of course what i see (or where i move) cannot possibly give me a reliable stats but it gives you the feeling that 1024 is a common res. even for non-related computer people who use it in their jobs, etc.
- RoomFive0
... And saying most people have their screen res set at 1024x768 as some of my mates think is bull****
... As a lot of people have no idea HOW to change their screen settings... you have to consider the fact that most people have no idea what they are doing with computers... and not everyone that looks at websites are computer literate! :/
- Witt0
i'd throw in just +1px for good luck.
- RoomFive0
770 pixels wide.
Because you have to bear in mind that there are some arquad buggers in the world that still have their screen res set at 800x600. And you also have to take into account the width of the scrollbar on the right of the page... so 770 pixels.

what about considering a more liquid layout and a percentage width?
The 1024x768 market is now over 50% but you're still looking at nearly 20% on 800x600 so make your own mind based on target market for the site you're building. These stats may help? http://www.w3schools.com/browser…

let me check a dictionary.

on columns, to quickly start a layout, I'll often just throw up 5 150px columns, with gutters of around 5 pixels, which leaves me with a 770px width.
but really, I'm more interested in discussing our ongoing problems with the disenfranchised masses...
- Witt0
i think it really depends, and you can't possibly agree in having 1 standard measure. i think it's more important to establish the widths of columns and work your way up from it. could be 860, 900-something etc.
for a common 3-column site, i think having columns below, 275 + spaces, indentes, etc is unthinkable -- so you'll end up with something between +850/900. but i also think that it is important to leave a nice blank margin on the right if the site is left-aligned.

couldn't possibly agree on the dimensions of a webpage, Nairn, on that we are diametrically opposed, love your ideas on sterilising the poor though, that's my kind of thinking...

(Dec 20 06, 03:18)Couldn't agree more Gentlemen.
However, I think we should set an example of our chivalry and nobility and put the able bodied among them to work in the fields - give them a fair crack of the whip what!
We'll hang the coloreds though - curb this rise against their station before it gets out of hand.

see, I like the inherent decadence of allowing half of my enormo-monitor's screen to go completely to waste, knowing the electricity involved in said could run a small african city for about a month. hahaha, fuck the poor
