Anyone get a chance to check out the 3 day 'exhibit' of street art in NYC at 11 Spring Street this weekend?
Incase you don't know what I'm talking about -- http://www.woostercollective.com…

i went on saturday.
there was a line around the block to check out the interior, but the wait was worth it. most of the work was just amazing (check the flickr pool) and there was a strange mixture of people at the spot which made it all the more interesting.

Damn. I read about the place in the NY Times. I ran by it last week on my morning run but didn't know it was a whole show inside. The exterior looked great.

so who lights teh candles????

I know it's all going to have to be torn down so they can put renovate the condo, but these pictures look great. I'll have to check it out.

i thought a person bought it - not going to be condos????

it's going to be a multi-million dollar condo and I think the owners logic was that come today they were bringing in construction crews and they were going to sheetrock right over the work and "preserve" it like a time capsule for "future generations" to discover.
On the bad side, I think very few generations will be able to afford the 2.5 million dollars for the apts.
I also think they were thinking by making 11 Spring like sacred ground they could stop it from being bombed after they renovate.
on the good side, I still think it's gonna get bombed, even more.

I think street art took an enormous turn when banksy sold a $400.000 piece in LA a few months back. stencils, paint drips and calligraphy have come a long way. now that line goes all the way to the bank. http://streetsy.com/ has some killer pics of the event as well...

Outside look pretty neat. The line to go in ran around the corner and unfortunately I didn't have the time to wait, but from the flickr pics, it looks amazing. No doubt that this will become some kind of apt that no regular person can afford. Shame...

Here's the Times article from last week.

(Dec 18 06, 08:42)i don't think it took a turn - there's street art and then gallery art. banksy does both. but i couldn't care less who does what, where, or how much money they make doing it.
there will be a documentary about the wooster show. there was a crew there all weekend, filming and interviewing people.

check out what this crew did right before the opening:

yeah, i saw that. there were new layers every week. they covered most of DYM by the end of the day, then it looked like they came back again and went over it all the second night, and then more art over it the next day. fresh wall every day...
