good thinking, that sounds right.
I'm all for selling stuff in them though, and charging people to cross. Maybe I could do confessions and marriages too.
Of course, I would have to become a priest first - which religion has the easiest tests?

bridges were originally covered to protect them from the elements. being made of wood, keeping rain and snow off meant for longer lasting bridges. an early version of a civil engineering improvement.

The Western tradition of covered bridges originated in Central Europe. The European covered bridge consisted of a roof and siding that protected a wooden truss structure, thus contributing to bridge longevity.
In other words it made the bridge last longer.

my assumption makes less sense now that i've finished my coffee. i guess there weren't many horse drawn carriages hitting bridges at such a rate of speed that they would start doing 360's and busting through the railing.
