Man, I grew up in between Dallas and Fort Worth, went to college at UT Arlington, grew up in the nice safe suburbs but had plenty of exposure to lots of different people and whatnot between my mom living in Boston for 6 years, and especially once living in Arlington for 5 years.
There are fun things to do there, although 9 out of 10 of my friends who live there and used to think going to Dallas as "so cool" now don't even bother since Ft. Worth has become the fun place it is at night.
Maybe my issues are more personal, but Dallas and most of that area is just such a materialistic driven society, if you're not that kind of person it gets old very quickly. So many people have to be show-offs, have the best everything, biggest everything, etc.
People there can be nice, there's plenty of them, it's just that there's a particular attitude that people have there. So many cowboys in chinos and polo shirts chugging along in their truck waiting for someone to curse at or drive fast around or brag about their new golf clubs to.
As far as youth go there, it's just a bunch of poseurs.

the aquarium is awesome and they have a bar inside. Score!

Also Mal, look into the "Sea Sculptures" down on Corpus Christi Texas.
Used to be a pretty huge event. Not sure about it now. Might be something to look into.
I have a friend in either Dallas or Houston. I forget which. He's not really my friend, more of a friend of a friend. He's working for Dell. On second thought as I'm typing this, I always thought that guy was an asshole. Nevermind. You don't want anything to do with him.
