if you consider someone to 'deserve' a gift that you are giving them, then it is in fact a reward (for good behaviour or suchlike) and not a gift.
for a gift to truly be a gift, in fact, one could actually argue that the recipient ought not to deserve it.

the glory/reward dichotomy probably ends up being the de facto reason people give gifts in the first place.
the ultimate goal of the gift should simply be to make another person happy.
not to reward them for anything, nor to make yourself feel better because you're so generous, but simply because you know it will make them feel good.
