though it may not be monetary, you have clearly placed a value on your "free" services

I'm with you chossy. I recently "sacked" a client. They had paid me up to a point, but the line was crossed sometime ago. I continued working on the project in my spare time because I believed they really needed the help. Then I get two nasty emails wishing bad karma on me for canceling a meeting with them, and accusing me of being unprofessional. Not warranted at all, regardless of the fact that no money had been changing hands for several months.
