this is what i learned from watching discovery channel if you get trapped in the snowy wilderness while driving.
burn the tires to send the smoke signal and keep warm.
if you were to go on foot, rip the seating elements to use as insulation for your foot and other areas.
protect your head since a lot of body heat will escape from there.
protect your eyes, lights bouncing off the snow will blind you and really damage your vision.
eat bugs, worms if you can't find any food. it's not tasty but protein helps.
there are more. before i started to watch the show, my survival rate on the wild was pretty slim. now i feel i am somewhat equipped with the knowledge.

(Dec 6 06, 12:57)I meant when they got "stuck". It seems like it would be a lot more efficient just to get unstuck than to try to stay alive for over a week.
- morilla0
yeah,,, but it's not like he had alot of help. And trying to get unstuck in the snow is a bitch. Drains your energy.

Sucks. Sad....I was hoping for a happy ending to this..

so let me get this straight, man gets stranded in snow, abandons wife and children, walks off to die, wife and children survive waiting for rescue.
this man had no need in leaving his family like that. there is nothing in any survival book that defines his actions as appropriate
it seems to be funny to say when it's an obvious tool but in this case, not funny, again i'd say.
"survival of the fittest"
this mans actions seem selfish and for the good of the individual and not the community.
one failure at being rambo and the family grows up minus the father figure.
i hope everyone remembers the consequences of this mans actions, no matter how noble they may seem to be. the long term consequences are far more detrimental than his initial passing

me too. good thing we don't have snow down here. I guess FL ain't that bad.

it's harsh , but true. I am sure he was so filled with fear, love and determination for his family he thought it was the only way.
But you never , ever break the number one rule and that is never leave the group.

(Dec 6 06, 13:11)Yes, but I'd gladly take shoveling a couple feet of snow than trying to survive for a handful of days in the wild.
If I get stuck in the snow, I'm not thinking about saving my energy for the next week, I'm thinking about moving the snow so that I can get back to a hotel at night.

i think it's harsh and you don't know all the details and conditions they actually went through. we have been reading this news from the comfort of our own home or office.
there are so many cases where if one didn't go out to find the rescue, none survived.
- morilla0
yeah, its a flip of the coin
- version30
Yes, it is 50/50 and i do not bemoan the individual in this case. Just the textbook example of what not to do.
The emergency personel needed to be respected and believed in.
sad to see such an ending when it seems so obvious it did not need to be as bad as it was

it is sad that he didn't stay with the family...why walk off in some random direction. I've seen footage of where the car was found. why not walk on the forest road?
- grunttt0
the hours must have felt like days when you and your wife are sitting there with these two young children looking to you for their survival.
i think he was in a stage of panic.

(Dec 6 06, 13:28)Agreed. He stayed with his family in the car for a full week before he left. I would imagine after 7 days of waiting you begin to lose hope for a rescue.

:(
What you said is harsh, yet true, Justin. But it is really difficult to say since, like grunttt said, he probably was in a state of panic after waiting a whole week.

wow...i feel really sick after reading the story. that is just horrible.
