kid wants both - which one to get? The Wii looks fun as heck - has Mario (his favourite) - but the mx 480p (that you can only get with the Wii Component Video Cable) is nowhere near 1080pHD quality that the 360 will get.
So, not that I can find one yet, but do I forsake the graphics and gameplay of the 360 for the fun, family scent of the Wii?

As a kid myself, I'd say - Go Wii!

Or do I cave in and get both - Wii for him and 360 for me?
; )

I'm gettin' a Wii eventually, never had a 360

That's really only something you and the family unit can answer. There are certainly great experiences to be had on the 360, especially if online gaming is desirable to you. I would love to get a Wii, but personally I've never been an early adopter of consoles because I think it's totally worth waiting it out until the system and games mature. I doubt it'll be the case, but what if you pick up a Wii and all you end up with are the same gimmicks and mini games time and time again?
You also mention 480p vs. 1080p as a factor. I'm going to assume that you have a TV capable of handling the HD output, otherwise toss that concern to the curb. However, it's worth noting that for the foreseeable future, most games wont be able to push 1080p or 1080i natively anyway and many developers feel that 720p is the sweet spot. Again, right now. It's worth mentioning that in order to get true HiDef you'll need to fork out anotehr $200 for the HD-DVD addon.
I mentioned the online component of the 360 as being a selling point, and it's only going to get more robust, but the marketplace is also another sink hole of money if you let it. Remember that the 20gb hard drive will fill up faster than you might think. Just something to consider.
So to the matter at hand. If I were to go out and pick up one of the two today, I would probably get a Wii because my girlie likes to game, but WITH me. The more hardcore 360 stuff would just put her off. So which is more important to you?

You make a good point, Jevad - a very good point. *mulls a little.
Go Both, I say - Go Both!
(and let me know how good Gears of War is if you get it)

I'd say definitely get the Wii first since it's going to be for everyone to use. I'm sure kids will love the Wii, whereas the 360 is also nice but the games probably aren't as kid-friendly. You can also get the 360 for yourself at the same time, but in my opinion the Wii is better for the whole family.

i own a wii...and i freaking adore it...i've played the 360 and of course it looks better but the wii is such a universally fun system and tires you out because of all the moving....so yeah...instant nap time..

Wow welded! Thanks for that! Very comprehensive. Yeah I have a new HDTV - 50" of it! I think - also what I like about the Wii is the interactivity of it...

we have both a wii and a 360, and they are equally great fun! so basically i am saying: get both!

Which one has Duck Hunt again? Get that one because it comes with an orange gun.

Oh my gawd, Leah!!

haha

No problem. :)
And if getting both is a serious option, then you can't go wrong. The two systems don't compete directly, and the experiences will be different enough that you wont find much redundancy. The Wii60 is actually a pretty common solution for many people, and what's more is it costs the same as a single PS3 - were you to find one.
Either way, have fun!

the best (and most fun) games for 360 (gears of war, dead rising, ghost recon) are extremely violent. plus with hd, you can see all the gore up close.
not sure how old your kid is, but might want to keep that in mind when making a decision. the good games for wii, like zelda are probably a lot more family friendly.

I have the 3 systems (almost ashamed to say so hahaha) and I remember you talking about your kid, pretty young I think.
As johndiggity said, the good PS3 and xbox360 games will be pretty violent when the Wii is great fun for everybody and a good first step (graphics-wise) if you're thinking about getting several systems.
You'll have fun just watching your kid play with the Wii :-)

wii. cheap. save your money on 360 and invest for your kid's future!
my friend got a wii and he was saying he got sore playing too hard...
- Jaline0
Yup, the price is pretty great.

only problem is finding a Wii to buy :-(
- nLHb0
omg jox!!!

my only grudge with the wii is that it could have been either cheaper or more powerful.
If you look at the specs you'll just know that Nintendo is making quite a few bucks with every machine they sell at 250.
