Hi all,
I've been asked to design a poster for an event. Can anyone pass on any tips for designing posters, is there anything extra that needs to be taken into account over regular print design.
Thanks all.

ask your printer.

consider your audience. pay attention to the scale of everything, where is the person in relation to reading distance, what information is necessary, which can be left out. make it exciting, make it stand out so someone would walk up to it to find out more. not all info needs to be read at first glance, but i guess it could be if it's a limited amount.

hello. if it's for an outdoor location there's a lot of details you need to include. size (event, place and date should be seen at least from a reasonable distance - not just the side-walk) and background (contrast) are essential.

if you are new to this sort of scale, print it out (tile it if you don't have a large-format printer) to check font sizes, etc.

don't get too arty.
make sure it is readable.
make priorities in importance = size/prominence.
let color / image / typeface do the talking, do NOT go about and use tons of cliparts/illustrations to convey a simple feeling.
be more conscious of bleeds, as you do not always know if posters will be framed or not.
have fun.

check the weather.
use yellow on black or electric pink on blue with fog and rain.
