I have never prepared artwork for foil blocking. Is there anything I should do/remember?
Any references I can look at/read?

Colour it and name the colour foil block...

What phatlee said but different printers have different preferences.

Ok cool, I took that as a given.
No trapping or anything, I take it they can block straight over a printed area?

I recently enquired about some business cards which will have foil blocking over a screen-printed design.
So yeah should be fine.
Let us see the results when they are done, I'm a sucker for finishes.

Best to just ask the printer. If they're professional about their job and you don't ask a really silly question they will tell you exactly how they would like the artwork set up.
although there shouldn't be anything odd about specifying a foil, like people just said just make it a bold colour and label it as a foil.
It's much less hassle for them to tell you how they want the artwork than to receive it from you and find out its wrong and have to fix it or ask you to change something. Just ask!

Sucker away!
- if you send as layers label on the layer off the artboard "foil block" and best to call the layer the same. can even write some info on the layer like "don ot print this text - just print the logo etc" if you feel the need.
or simply - explain it to the printer in detail about the file you are sending.
