Just an FYI, I just migrated to the Grid Server and some stuff came up I wasn't anticipating so I figured I'd post it here in case anyone else is wondering what's going to happen.

Step 1, prepare old site: This takes 12 hours. They send you a note when its done.

Step 2, choose new hosting plan: You have to pay for another year at least when you do this. Luckily they have a GridServer Lite that has roughly the same setup as my old ss server did for the same price, or you can go with the new $20/mo version. I don't need all that so I stuck with the $8/month option. They take the unused portion of what you paid for your current service and credit towards the next year of service. You don't actually pay at this step, you just see what it will cost.

Step 3 (don't have the label in front of me anymore): This step is where you actually pay, you have the option of using a new credit card. The process took about 5-10 minutes and at the end I got an error saying I didn't have authority to do whatever it was I didn't have authority for but I also immediately got an email saying migration was successful and was able to log on. I reported the error.

My site is back up now (I broke the index page so it looks crappy) and the email I got contained new instructions to connect which I have yet to go through. All in all it was a pretty smooth process. Thanks MT.

I don't get the payment thing. Can you (possibly) clarify.

I have more than a year left on my current ss plan, so I don't quite comprehend the whole additional year thingl. However, if I'm understanding you correctly, then that's nuts.

they basically take the difference you have left and do that. For instance I have the monthly plan at 19.99 and when i migrated I had to pay .01 cents since I had just paid this months service. The migration is worth it, lots of great features and the account center is more user friendly then the last.

agreed, just the simpler control panel makes it worth it from my perspective. So basically instead of my acct being up in December, I now have a year from today with them and they took what I would have paid for next month and applied it to the cost of the year.

I know its probably in the migration guide but I'm just glad I could put it on a credit card and pay it off in a week since I had done step 1 and didn't know I had to pay at step 2/3. If I had been unable to pay for the next year I'd be annoyed.

I migrated to the new Grid Server (not the lite - needed the extra databases and bandwidth)

I had a few PHP hassles.

    - Because any secondary domains are in different folder scructures, I had some cusom .HTACCESS relative path issues I wasn't expecting.
    - Some settings seem different - I think it's because register_globals is now off... had to make some PHP code adjustments (but could have changed the register globals setting back)
    - Generally I seem to get slower response times accessing my sites (although pages may load faster). I seems database calls are taking a little longer.
    - The new webmail is the only real thing I like - everything else is "blah, whateva"
    - No longer use localhost for database names, so had to adjust all my code for that: the BIG bummer here is they don't give you the domain name to change it to until after you migrate, so there is no way you can prepare for this one. I had to turn all my sites off as soon as they migrated, fix code, then turn back on.

I'm still confused. It's not possible to migrate whilst keeping your same payment plan?

This would be so much easier if they actually had the proper information on their site. I don't see how they can launch something like this with so little support information available.

i just migrated and kept the old payment plan.

it's not fucking rocket science giys - just read the info they supply.

surely this place aint full of ADA illiterates?!?

Could you kindly point me in the direction of said supplied information then? All I've found is a very brief migration guide which lists a couple of things I should be worried about after - not before the switch.

Payment, it works like this. Basically you are renewing early. Lets say you signed up 2 months ago for a year contract. That means you have 10 months left on your current plan. When you migrate you sign up for a year from the day you migrate. Since you paid for the next 10 months already, the money for those 10 months is applied to the bill for the next year. When you sign up for the next year you are given the option of keeping your current price plan or upgrading to the new one. Lets say you choose to keep the current price plan, the money from the 10 months you've paid for but havent used are applied to the cost of the new, migrated plan and you pay for the extra 2 months, or in this case $16.

    clear?

    Thanks, ns.

I'm still confused, though. Are you paying monthly or something?

I signed up for a 2-year plan in January, so that's why I'm a bit baffled. I mean, I've already paid. Why should my contract be extended through 2009 just to move to something that's mandatory? I mean, if I wait for automatic migration, will I still have to pay for an additional year? And if not, can a renew in another year and still get my current rate (nt discount included)?

  • ninjasavant0

Not sure about the last bit of questions. But basically I think you could just consider the remainder of your contract cancelled and a new contract starts from the day you upgrade. Kind of like if you get a new cell phone and take the new contract to get the cheaper cell phone. The new contract starts that day.

So if you have a 2 year contract, you can sign up for a new 2 year contract and apply the money you paid for the next year and 2 months towards the cost of the new contract will have the same monthly pricing rate you paid in January.

is anyone on the newstday 50% discount for life offer? does this carry over automatically if you migrate?

  • ribit0

Is there a (good) GridServer discount code? I'm on discounted DV that I dont use much, want to switch to Grid to simplify things...
