Not sure about the last bit of questions. But basically I think you could just consider the remainder of your contract cancelled and a new contract starts from the day you upgrade. Kind of like if you get a new cell phone and take the new contract to get the cheaper cell phone. The new contract starts that day.
So if you have a 2 year contract, you can sign up for a new 2 year contract and apply the money you paid for the next year and 2 months towards the cost of the new contract will have the same monthly pricing rate you paid in January.
