maybe Metadesign was overrated.
Gerard Unger made this one in 1972:

?!
these guys surely have some other job and do not live from typography. check what they call "prices"!

(Oct 19 06, 15:05)like underware these are very small foundries who put immense amounts of work and research in building these fonts.
unlike, for example, adobe who mostly hire typographers to digtize existing fonts or update digitized fonts, or simply buy fonts here and there.
fonts like the ones from TEFF are very very extensive (complete) and also very carefully crafted.
a few of these actually made it to become bodytext for a few reknowned Dutch newspapers.

the bio's of the designers may be an interesting read:

...................................yes, you're right, Crouwel. I'm not contesting that. I was just looking at the prices from a small job or freelance point-of-view. Entreprises must pay for such delicate work. no question.

exactly vsc. the prices are insane, but on the other hand i don't see many freelance designers opting for such an extensive font anyway. but major media corporations (like the newspapers who use this for many years!!) should indeed pay up. i think the price was set this high for this reason.

Yes. no doubt. Making good type to easy to get underestimates the trouble of getting there. That is happening in most areas of design, as you probably know. So i think it's right. It shouldn't be too easy to get. The harder the better ;)

you know, european typography needs a shell like Emigre (US). A big input/output thing. there's many good work scattered in random shops for many-a-purse but it's hard to find quickly.
