yeah, don't confuse copyrighting a design with trademarking it. Anybody can and should copyright their work just by slapping on a ©. It's a simple and easy way to establish copyright ownership to a design, although it helps to have some way of proving that you had it out there with the © symbol at a certain point in time.
for logos, you'll need to register the design as a service mark or trademark (SM or TM), and that's done by country for the most part. If you're doing the full registration process, you'll want to hire a trademark attorney or service.
if you know you'll need to register a trademark, be sure to start the process before you finalize the design! you may get rejected, and then your client is stuck with a logo that could invite legal challenges.

putting a © on it doesn't establish copyright (you already had that when you created the work)...adding the © just makes it clearer that you intend to assert your rights.
