Is it at all possible to antialias individual items in Illustrator (such as one piece of text)? I know you can antialias everything, but it would be nice to be able to view web text as it appears on screen.

if that were possible... I'd probably stay away from Photoshop when I was comping for web and do everything in Illy...
:)... if you find a way... do share!

there is! I don't have illustrator open in front of me, but I believe if you select a piece of text and go to the Effects menu. Then go to Rasterize. A dialogue will pop up.
I leave everything the same by default (makesure it's 72dpi for screen). The only thing I change is "Add ____ around object". I change this to 0.
Hit OK and presto.Let me know if this doesn't work.

What you mean is NOT anti-aliased.
By now, all browsers anti-alias text, so I don't think you have to do that anymore.

(Oct 14 06, 07:23)That's curious - none of the 4 computers in this household, nor the 8 computers in my old office had anti-aliased text in-browser? Personally speaking, I prefer old-school aliased text - goota love 'em jaggies.
