Bought one online last night. 120GB. Using it for a PowerBook.
Any good?
FYI, it's $69 on buy.com, with a $20 mail in rebate, or a $10 instant rebate if you purchase through google checkout.

damn, i though you were being haunted by your dead HD on fri. the 13th.

No, but I might dress up as a Phantom HD for Halloween.
Booooo!

So is this one any good? Is it gonna last me? This is my first external HD.

NOT THE RIGHT THING TO SKIMP ON.
- CincodeMayo0
Did I skimp? I've heard the Fantom name before, and my last company used it for some high profile clients, so I'm guessing these things just don't die after a couple months. Am I wrong?
Just seemed like a good deal to me.

I sort of agree with kyl3 here, but I don't have much experience with external HDs. Just that it makes sense to pay more if it actually is better quality, since you will obviously be saving things that are important.

it really depends on who made what's on the inside.

How can I tell who made what's inside? Didn't Fantom? Or do they just buy the inside and make the case?
Here's the specs.

my comment was a general one on ex HD's. I don't know about phantom, but at that price i'd get two, since you need to back up your backup drive anyway.

not to ruin your afternoon but I had a phantom HD that I got from mc mall and it diesd on me after a few months.
But.. I took it to a production house in oceanside where they had issues with FW drives in the past.
Because I had it for only a few months I did not loose THAT MUCH data.
I now have a Lacie 250 FW 800 and I had it for around 9 months and its working great
