Alright, so I read up on recent PVN Dreamhost threads, and I'm getting a pretty consistent vibe about their miserable-ness.
I'm hosted with them, and my site is running so painfully slow (30+ seconds to return simple database results), that I figure it's time to jump ship.
Or could sloppy programming bog down the return time on a database query? Dammit. Such a pain in the ass.

whats the code doing and how many rows is it sorting through??
- blastofv0
well that's the thing – I hired out a PHP guy who's always been a solid programmer – so I don't know how he has it set up. When I launched the site, everything was running smoothly though. I'm quick to assume it's a DH problem considering their poor reputation.

unless you have a db which could possible grow quickly then i doubt its a php problem. can you test the site elsewhere to make a comparison - maybe on yr local machine?
if it runs fine elsewhere you know DH arent giving you waht yr paying for

show us the query.

i can pretty much bet the money i owe in taxes it is not DH, but the db architecture, and/or the query.

I haven't heard about this being a problem with many Dreamhosters, but I could be wrong.

cool, thanks for the responses – it's my identityarchives site, and any old search of the database is chugging at painfully slow speeds.
well sh**, it was this morning. now it's just kind of slow... that's what leads to me to think the hosting is causing problems. the return time for a basic search is really inconsistent.
DB stuff is beyond me, so I don't really have the background to know what might be causing problems:

search for anything – like 'spiral' or 'silhouette'

seems pretty fast to me

i would not even BEGIN to call that slow query speed, let alone blame DH or any hosting provider for that.
i just tried like 10 terms and all were returned w/ no noticable lag.
sorry dude, but unless you have some seriously lightweight, elegant code, you really cannot expect any faster responding.
- blastofv0
yeah, so it's much faster now. the exact same search that took 3 seconds just now took like 50 seconds this morning.
servers? programming? both? something else?

yah, took about 4 seconds for me. i've been with dh for a couple of years now but am really thinking about switching. i don't get a ton of traffic, most just for my blog, but it just seems like lately stuff has been uber slow. mt pricing is somewhat competitive now but if they can provide more consistent service i may go with them regardless.
- ldww0
it was not 50 seconds for me, but still noticably slow.
i switched off dreamhost like 4 years ago, and much happier without them.

I love dreamhost. They have been real good to me. I've never had a slow DB problem or anything like that. Good luck!

thanks yall. so what are the typical culprits for slow DB results? I'd like to track down the problem all the same. Dreamhost issue or not.
