Anyone know exactly what the deal is with so many football players, NFL and college, wearing little strips of cloth just above their elbow.
Like T.O. in this photo:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com…It's everywhere! Watched the Bears game yesterday, and the Texas & OU game Saturday.
Anyone know what the significance is?

the same reason hipsters wear useless sweatbands. Actaully, it is supposedt o cause tension on the tendons but I really don't think it does too much.

works the same as this...

but no one has made one yet for the elbow.
and, i suppose if tied tight enough would improve the 'pumped' look in your arms to make your veins pop out more. which i guess is a bit of coolness factor as your catching 3 passes for 45 yards while getting paid a few million.

Haha "no one's made one for the elbow yet..."
So they just tear up their old shirts and tie em off like they're getting ready to shoot up some drugs.

most of the guys use white athletic tape i think.
but yeah.

for receivers w/bare forearms... it would seem to me that they want to reduce the amount of sweat on their forearms as I could see sweat being an unwanted 'lubricant' that could reduce the receiver/running back's grip on the ball... especially if defense men are punching at the ball while in his arms trying to force a turn-over...
... mind you... that's my theory (meaning... it has nothing do w/looking 'cool' or pumping up your muscles... but has an actual 'designed' use that players are becoming more aware of -- sweaty-slick forearms)

so how does that little piece of fabric absorb all the sweat coming out of your forearms?
...or is it just to catch the excess coming from the armpit?
- algorithm0
there is no way to absorb anything. If anyone has ever played , you are constantly drenched the whole game.

---that's my theory...
... just like the wrist bands stop the sweat on your arms from running further down into your hands...
... I'm just thinking you now have two 'stops' that keep you even dryer...

I actually worked at nike doing packaging and I asked the producer what these are for. He had no idea but said they sell a ton of them.

or... OR... maybe it's to keep the nerves in the back of the elbow warm?
That's a 'weather sensitive' nerve that can cramp up when it gets cold... but for those who prefer the 'feel' of the ball to the skin of their arms... they use these bands to protect the nerves?
... just another theory.

nah, as far as i know it helps to keep the joint stabalised... ie. it supports the tendon (when your muscles get tired), which means you use less muscle power to bend the joint.

warmth? sweat collecting?
Seriously guys, it's little more than a shoe-lace or a torn of strip of an undershirt! :D

here's a better description:
"The role of tape is to limit the movement in an injured joint to prevent excess or abnormal movement. In addition it should provide support to the muscles surrounding the joint that may be under additional strain due a the ligament injury.
Another benefit of taping is thought to be the enhanced proprioception (or kinaesthetic feedback) that the tape provides during movement (or, in other words, it is thought to improve co-ordination)."
