out of enthousiasm i just went up my mother's attic (i am looking after her place at the mo') and dug up some old film equipment i had.
one of the first things i found was a nice ol' bolex 8mm. i was in such a nostalgic mood that i took it out and started looking through the viewfinder.
apparently the hood (what is this in engrish?) on the viewfinder was soft as butter!! but there was no heat source or anything near.
i just spent 10 minutes washing it off my eyebrows and fingers.. then i found out it was all over my shirt as well, which is ruined now.
how can this occur?
i thought old rubber would only dry out and fall apart.. this was more like semi-liquidized..
friggin' weird!

yeah, i've head similar experiences. i think it was swimming goggles from the 80's. i guess it just depends on the composition of the umbrella term: "rubbber".
dig?

probably, some cleansing product did that job to the eyecup.

so that you know. if it's indeed 8mm and not super 8 you won't be able to use it as they don't make 8mm film anymore (they do super 8mm cartridges).
