Why do couples hold hands?

I'm not big into the whole PDA thing, but holding hands in my opinion doesn't really count.
I hold hands with biddies, haha.
Actually I'm more attuned to lock arms like I'm escorting them somewhere ...
That's mainly because they are so roofied up that they can't stand up on their own and I have to kind of Weekend At Bernie them around.

my wife and i were walking a few days ago and some old guy yelled 'HEY' at us from a balcony, we looked up and he and his wife were standing there, maybe in their 70s or 80s... holding their hands and giving us the thumbs up for holding ours. gave us hope that we can crush the divorce rate statistics. it's the little things.

Well to be honest i don't really like to hold hands that much. I tend to walk faster than my gf, and holding hands kind of makes me feel like i'm on a leash or something. i really just need some personal walking space you know??
but anyway, i do hold her hand when we go out because i know she likes it....but only for a few minutes at a time and then i take a break.

I do tend to walk faster than most people, and I hate when the person I'm with is right behind me (anywhere that's not beside me), but nowadays most places are too crowded to be walking right beside each other. So...I'd say that that's another good reason why I wouldn't hold hands with someone all the time.
