Now that the Malwitz surfboard logo contest is over I wanted to ask a question concerning a couple of the entries (i believe they were submitted by a member here).
I was hoping to get some guidance on how to get such a great gritty, hand-drawn/painted look.
The entry pics are here.

thank you.

maybe go nuts and hand-draw it gritty, or paint it. Then scan it in, trace.

I would wager that it actually was hand painted

yeah you know, CRAZY at it may sound, but some people actualy pick up a pencil or some paint once in a while.

i do too but i dont know anything about properly scanning a painting to get a high quality end computer result... in fact the reason im asking the question is because i have a logo i painted that i want to digitize.

my tracing skills leave alot to be desired.

scan at a decent res, hoefully you inked it in black ink and/or use levels to bump the contrast, or keep it real simple and use brightness/contrast, whichever way you prefer. Then I use Freehand to trace the outline, I guess you could make a selection and convert to paths in photoshop but the result is never too hot, ideally you have a copy of streamline somewhere.

and I mean the autotrace thingmy

scan it in as a hi res image - 200dpi will do, then place it in ill CS2, object/live trace/expand... done.
the live trace feature is brilliant in illy CS2.

thanks for the point in the right direction, this project has been an attempt to get away from the computer and straight electronic stuff and make some really tangible art................which i can then put on the computer.

you need to learn how to use the pen tool in Illy. Auto trace rarely works, and it usually creates many many pointsd you need to edit anyway.
Profesionals trace with the pen tool.

(don't let the ugly site fool you)
better results than streamline IMHO plus it can handle compund shapes, none of that white shape on black shape jive.
