Been wantng a road bike for some time but now I'm moving to a house on a dirt road. Thinking a cross bike might be the answer.
any favorite brands/models. say up to $1400.

I have a Fuji cross comp ( http://fujibikes.com/2006/bikes.… ) that has been good for me. The MSRP is a little over $1000. Decent components, carbon fork, only thing I don't like is the paint job.

yeah I just want a paint job, not graphics. Although the lamond graphics have presence.

cross rules, duder. for where you will be, it would be a rad ride to have to do some commuting on for sure!
Kona's rides are pretty sweet as well (http://www.konaworld.com/shoppi...

it is like 100,000 square feet of bike for sale. i mean REALLY for sale.
crazy deals on tons of season-old pro stuff from them directly, to every bike geek on the front range looking to sell their crap to be able to buy more. : )
i have been to/sold stuff there probably 5 years. great spot for 'stuff' and bikes.

Not sure about schwinn quality these days, but their cyclocross bikes look pretty smooth.
