"he didn't leave due to "unpopularity". He's been forced to set a date for resignation due to a widespread rebellion in the Labour party and a wave of high profile cabinet resignations. The Labour party are fearful of a resurgent Conservative party under David Cameron and are looking to reinvigorate Labour in the run-up to next-years local elections, and subsequent general election. More than that, Gordon Bronw's allies have brooked all they can brook, and can brook no more!!"

our cabinet (ministers+pm)resigned for the third time or something recently (it is becoming a trend in NL), it always happens on the spot, not like, "yes, i'll resign, but not until may"..weird..
although the government is called "demissionair" which means it cannot make serious decisions until the next (earlier)elections take place.

"yeah... i wasn't trying to start a fight or anything... I was merely mentioning that 'resignation' due to public and political pressure probably wouldn't occur over in the states... and that I didn't quite understand really...
"it's called impeachment there..
but yeah, if our pm did what bush did, he'd prolly had to resign immediatly....
it's weird to see what a US president can come away with these days..
dunno if it is very democratic for a country that advocates it so much..

"resignation", though probably pretty accurate in one respect, isn't really the appropriate term here, particularly with the media managed nature of New Labour. this is a hand over of teh leadership of teh labour party and prime ministership, so the lengthy approach is the way its being handled.
If he was resigning because everybody now hates him and he's had his time, he'd do it right away, which is precisely why he isn't, because thay do. understand? ;)
