Here's a baffling one for you.
We're trying to size down some photos for inclusion on a lawyer directory site. They have to be under 10K, and 150x200 in size or less.
Using Office PictureManager (yah, I know, gag) my coworker was able to simply take a 300 dpi, 115x150 jpg, lower the size, save it, and get it under 10K.
Me, however, with F'ing Photoshop and far more tools at my disposal than PICTURE MANGLER cannot for the love of God do that.
I started with original 300 dpi 3"x4" images, changed them to 72 dpi, even sized them down to 65x85 px. and even saved them as jpgs at only level 8 compression quality AND THEY ARE STILL OVER 15K!!
Someone please, please explain this to me, or at the very least if you are just as baffled, please give me a virtual hug to end my frustration.
I'm trying to set it up to resize 75 photos w/a batch operation after I figure out how to get a single photo to what we need - to save her the trouble of editing each picture on it's own.
RARRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

dude, that should not be over 10K for sure! i just did a test and it's like 4k at 60 quality jpg.
what up with your PS...piece of shit apparently

and may be a dumb question, but you are not getting the file size in the preview window right? 'cause that is never right for anything under 36k (i think?)

Try Save for Web.
Size the pics the way you want them, and File->Save for Web and pic an appropriate preset format.

yea, just tested it myself as well. jpg 80% = 7k at 150x200.

No, I mean when I view the file in a list in windows explorer, it's still way larger.

I had a similar photo problem a week ago. The photo I submitted for something was smaller than ideal HxW-wise because I was trying to get it to fit the file size.

Save For Web
click the arrow above the settings and do "Optimize to File Size"
also, sometimes "Include ICC Color Profile" is checked and it makes your tiny picture like 2 or 3 times the size it should be. make sure it's not checked.

if you have fireworks, try it through there. i've always had better luck compression-wise with that app.
though i agree, something is acting screwy with PS and those images.

if you right-click and view properties in windows, you will get a more accurate file size.

the reason the regular saving method yields higher filesizes is because photoshop creates a thumbnail for the picture as well. so it's like 1.5 pictures you're saving, not one.
save for web does not create the bundled thumbnail. lower file size.
