I've been using the 18-70 kit lens that comes with the Nikon D70s and recently bought a 2.8 50m zoom lens. I was stunned by the difference in quality, the main thing is I've been thinking of buying a new zoom lens, has any experience on which one to go for? I've heard the 18-200 Nikon is great (but difficult to get hold of) or is it worth looking at the Sigma lens?

I recently purchased a Sigma 18-200, very impressed. I know it's not the comprabale Nikon model but it's a nice lens, and it goes for under half the price.
-good luck

i just ordered 18-200 VR lens. i should find out when it'll get shipped. but i heard it's about 2weeks from this particular shop i ordered from.
lenses last easy 20-30yrs if you treat it right. i'd invest and buy the top quality. i have 20yrs old nikon lens and it works great and i love the solid handling of it.

sorry I was away there, aye think I'll go for the Nikon, ideally I would like to go for the 70-200 but can't get my head around putting down over a grand for it...

I have the 7--200 VR 1:2.8--it's big, heavy, and expensive but an awesome lens with beautiful "bokeh". It cost me around 1500

thats the one, I'm guessing its worth the investment then!

maybe, in the long run, although the 18-200 is tempting as the total all purpose walking-around lens, even if it's more of a toy and not nearly as fast. Also, if Nikon ever does develop a full frame sensor the 70-200 should still work
- tkmeister0
is it the same for 18-200mm, rand?
- Rand0
not sure, but I believe the 18-200 would only work with the smaller sensors they currently use--but who knows if Nikon would ever develop a full frame sensor anyway? There's no indication of it that I've heard about

ps. that price is RIDICULOUS! I got it here for about 275 euro's, which is about 330 dollars or something...

Is the Tamron any good? I was wondering if instead of getting the astronomical Nikon 70-200 (2:8) would it be better getting the Sigma 70-200 (2:8) or the Nikon 18-200 (3.5).

this lens thing is just as difficult as which camera to get...
if i find out i can't get nikkor 18-200 before my scotland trip, i may just get a sigma 18-200.
i have also been looking at sigma 10-20mm.

thanks otapnam, I know of the review sites. It's just I've been using a d70 with the kit lens which has been fine, and I'm about to buy a lens which for me is a bit of a jump or leap of faith. I was just wondering if from a designers perspective there's any stories or advice, thats all.
Thanks Rand, I think I will go for the Nikon 18-200 that is if they get them to the UK..
