What's the best way to work if you're editing video to be used on the web AND on a dvd? I'll probably be doing various segments for the web, and only the final cut will be on dvd. So would it be best to work in square pixels and make it non-square as a last step for dvd?

In after effects I always work square pixels then when it comes to rendering out for broadcast stick the comp in a non-square comp.

when i make compositions for motion i always start with square pixels.
actually there's a simple rule you can follow
for pal system multiply the width of the non-square composition with its pixel aspect ratio you will get the width of the square pixel composition. for ntsc you would multiply the height.
for me i worlk with pal so if i want to make a 720x576 pal dv (aspect ration 1.067) i would make the compotition 768x576. or for widesccreen i would make my composition 1024x576

when you squeeze a screen, say from 768 px wide to 720 px wide, you do actually lose 48 pixels, which can cause a stepping effect on high contrast graphics (like the black against white that you have).
Have you looked at it on a telly tho? the fuzziness of a telly can kinda smooth it back into something you won't worry about.

when you convert from from square pixels to non-square you don't lose any pixels cos 720 with the aspect ratio of 1.067 (non-square) has the same 'width' as 768 with the aspect ratio of 1 (square).

I just noticed the pixels were because squeeze was (slightly) resizing the dimensions. I didn't notice at first, that's fixed now. Thanks.

no but you DO lose pixels! it looks the same width because of the different shape, as you say, but you have physically lost the pixels. i was really geeky and tested it cos i couldn't get my head around it when i first started doing broadcast design.

yeah, cause wouldn't 768 square pixels converted to non-square stretch all of them. making it even wider than 720non-square/768square.

exactly skelly

i like when motion talk pixel dimensia.
please continue.

in after effects, make a comp 768x576 pal square pixels add a solid layer with the same dimension as the comp. make another comp 720x576 with pal non-square. drop the square comp to the non-square comp. should fit right in nicely. check the layer transform handles. they should be on each of the for corners. try it vice versa
any how might want to readd this:
