Hi all, is it possible to take on a member of staff when I am self employed.
This person would simply be employed for 20 hours a year, just not sure if I would then need to set up as a company as oppose to self employed.
p.s. I am in the UK
Thanks.

20 hours a year = do it yourself.

hmmm... i don't think you would call them staff... you would be simply just outsourcing to them...
are you sole-proprietorship? or something like that

Depends on what you are doing. If you are billing a company for his/her time with a mark-up then it makes sense to set yourself up as a LLC. This allows you to make something a hour off this resource. There is other tax pluses with your own LLC.

A) 20 hours a YEAR? WTF is that? That's not a staff...
B) Why "hire" staff? Just subcontract it out. It's a matter of semantics on one hand but the taxman, at least in the States, looks differently at "staff" vs. "subcontractor"...

Well, I have rang a few accountants today, one of them mentioned something about them only taken on a certain number of clients because over a certain amount and they have to pay more.
So, he mentioned that I 'employee' his mrs and he does the work.
All sounds dodgy to me, just got me thinking about wether or not I could employee somebody, doubt I will use this accountant though, I did say I was self employed.

employ his mrs?? WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?!
seems real shady!

A) Do NOT use that accountant
B) Don't hire anyone
C) HIRE his Mrs., bang her, then fire her...

sounds ropey to me. did he say that he will charge you more accountancy fees for the more clients you take on? If so find someone else
