Sorry..really long post. But I need some advice.
I recently started a 'Logo Contest' and spread it out around the design community. I got alot of great response but also alot of negative. Almost to the point of hate mail. Designers being being fed up with offers of 'spec' and deciding to take it out on me and my one man, no-profit, just for fun operation. Anyway, still it made think. Think about why I started it and what my intentions were. I just want a logo from a great designer. In trade for a custom surfboard. So what I'm asking you all is what to do. My two options are to 1. Keep the contest going and accepting submissions and most likely receiving more 'hate' mail. or 2. Give in to my conscience and in respect for the design community close the contest, and reopen it as a job for hire. I would repost it as a paying job (trade of course) and email all those who already submitted. I would just ask for some samples of work and then award the job to one designer. I'm feeling really bad, because of all the work people have already put into it, but ultimately that may even help their changes of getting awarded the job anyway ( or not). Let me know what you think...thanks.

I HATE YOU AND YOUR STUPID SURFBOARDS!
Kidding. I participated. I don't see why people are having a problem.
- rikydot0
Yeah, threats of hitting me over the head with it. Nice.

60% of people are assholes, fuck them. do your thing, it is a contest for a custom surfboard with a logo designed by the winner.

depends on the time and effort you want to put into it and whether you give a shit about what others think.
and how soon you want that surfboard.

Fuck the haters mate.
I think something may have gotten lost in your advertising of it.
The winner gets a free board - that's not free work. You're not keeping any of teh work that doesn't win...I really don't see the problem.

If people want to do it then they will do it, if people want to send hate mail then they are probably very bored.
- dirtydesign0
Fuck them. It's your gig. I think it was understood that you were just throwing this out there.

I bet most of the haters are either young or inexperienced.

Are you not liking the logos you've received? Do a vote on NT maybe...

spec work = bad
While I think design contests (w/ money or prize) is a sneaky way to get spec work. I don't have a problem with it, i just won't enter it. Simple
But most Great designers won't touch it because it's pretty much spec. so your really looking for a logo from a jr designer. But really, fuck em'. But I think at this point you can't just change the rules of the game. Keep it a contest and give the wiener the board.

There are a couple designers who submitted that I am considering. And still waiting on more who said they were going to. Just feeling bad like I'm pimping people out for nothing. Don't like the hate.

com'on we all know that designers are concieded arrogant bitchy think are over all way to opinionated little pricks.... whats the surprise
im sure they will bitch about the job if you do that... about the salary about you there is no winning they are almost worse than a girlfriend

I don't see a problem - people know what they are getting into.
However, you said "I just want a logo from a great designer." but really what you are getting is an array of different logos to choose from. So instead of selecting a designer based on his/her previous work and establishing a dialogue, you have a bunch of people taking shots in the dark hoping one hits the target. Seems like a waste of a lot of people's time to me.
SO no, you are not doing anything wrong, but you should think about all the non-winners and figure out a way to reward them. Like second and third pizes, posting everyone's entry online (so they get exposure) and "every entry gets a free sticker/pin/whatever cheap"

I say keep it running, but don't take the piss, say run it for another week or so then pick a winner, if you don't like any of the logos and your not going to use any of them then simply give the board away but email the winner and say something like a freind has you by the balls so they ar edoing the logo so their feelings don't get hurt to the best one and then perhaps pay for a pro to do it properly.

Once you've started something you have to finish it. if you back out now it will be worse. sorry you are getting hate mail. noone should send hate mail like that unless the person receiving it is seriously affecting their life in a negative way. i agree that the non-winners should get exposure for their hard work. and man a surfboard is a great prize.
