NT people, I am on the verge of leaving this company, but have a dilemma.
My portfolio will cost £238.21 to print. The second option is not as impactful. As a designer I mean business, and I will deliver the goods, but for a fair price.
The cost is for a poster with all my selected work on it at A1 size with a reverse back print. Steal the idea if you will, I'm looking to banish all manner of leather cases altogether.
what do you think people? is it worth the money?

i think it's a little self glorifying

its a novel thing to send out in the post (I've seen CV's like this) but as far as a folio goes I think its a clumsy idea that is not only expensive, but inflexible in that a) you cant target your folio for individual companies., and b) you cant add fresh work to it.

that's insanely expensive for an A1 print.
tried any other printers?

£238 ex. VAT sounds like a steal, but for how many copies?
- _salisae_0
you expect them to hang it on their wall?

wait, i may be wrong. i thought you mean only one print..

i made a small bundle/booklet myself. with some efficient producing i came to a price of about 8 euro's each..
and everyone liked it.

1 x double -sided A1 sized proof comes in at the region of £400+
machine time on a litho machine is a real bitch.
A1 size goes against Mr.Shaughnessy's advice, but I'm going for impact. I don't care if there's not enough room, we can always pin it on the wall or have it on the floor. I hate table to table talks, it's like a game of chess or an interrogation. I'm after a friendly discussion.
I have the real printed works on me. The A1 serves to be a tablecloth to show the other pieces of work I did to show consistency and context.
I'll leave it up to the interviewer to choose which projects they want to discuss. The A1 is split into 6 areas of design I've worked in. Think of 6 leaves of Creative review stuck side-by-side.

I’d want more for my buck for £400.
Certainly more than one copy.
Are they printing it on the bleached foreskins of 50 rare-breed whales?

You can get a much betterdeal than that, it's be good to have loads of A1 posters that you could leave behind - Padnells printers in tottenham just did a nice little cash job for me for cheap - get in touch if you want their details. Also, a poster's going to fuck up if you keep getting it out – better off havin cheaper ones you can leave with people.
Or am I just confused?

aren't there any of those online gang printing companies that would do it really cheap?

i once printed out seven double sided A2's for 150 euros

Plus, your potential employer might think that you're leaving it with them...then you would have to sheepishly fold/roll it back up and put it away while they're doing the final part of the interview.
'Well thanks for coming in..'
*crinkle fold crinkle
'we'll uh call you in a few days to let...'
*crinkle fold crinkle
Know wud I mean?

Do an A4 one as a "little leave behind"
- rasko40
you are insane if you pay that sort of money for one print. If you are only after one why not look into a light jet?
Either way I think it's a bad idea unless you are getting quite a few as leave behinds, that thing is going to get mighty scrappy mighty fast.

When you get an interview why don't you just rent a billboard close by the place for a day and pay out the arse to have your work posted up on it. Then you two can talk from the window while looking out a few hundred feet to your work.
THAT'S impact. This ain't Bush League here honest. You either go big or go home.
My next suggestion would be to get it printed on a blimp, but that's just silly.

lol k0na!
moon projection is also an option, but i would not recommend as the meeting would be taking place at night.

My second option was to have the work tattooed on the backs of two models. During the interview I'd ask for them to strip off and then stand next to each other, their backs making up for the work side of the poster. After discussing that side's work, I'd ask for them to turn around to show the front side...

I dunno, maybe I should look into getting thinner prints made. To stop any show-through, I'm going for 300 gsm print wtih VGL. The other cheaper printers wouldn't accept my large image files and Indesign layouts. I don't trust the requested high-res PDF for quality. I could get 200 A1 posters in China for a fraction of the price but the delay is upto a month and I can have this poster for Thursday and start applying for jobs immediately. I never went to more than 4 interviews before getting the job I wanted, what would I do with the rest of the posters?
I waited one and a half years to make my move. Now that my wife finally got a job so I can happy leave where I am now.

to be honest, I imagine receiving a tube in the mail and trying to unroll the poster, not having it lay flat, getting frustrated, then throwing it into the trash.
Unless you were a respected poster designer of course.
