Doesn't seem like you're getting creative control. Sounds sketchy. Are you presenting the comp yourself? or are they?

I am getting creative control. I could go a totally different direction. There are technical guidelines and components etc. that I have to design around. They just like certain components of the design they showed me. It's basically they like the layout but not the treatment. The layout was determined by the "governing body"
I am trying to stick with the no spec work attitude. Here is what I am doing. I am giving up the lead and approaching another studio/agency but I would have an integral part.
Have to see what they say.
Just to let you know...its not your typical run of the mill client.

If you do do it, do it with every expectation to get fucked in the end. If you can deal with that, in a risk assessment kinda way, rock it out...

if they are so fabulous and have such great exposure then they should pay you for your work. Even RFP's I've bid on, if the prospective client wants to see ideas, they allow a budget to pay for the mock-up of those ideas.
It ain't rocket science.

yeah its a tricky situation.... but let's just say it does go down the tubes...
I will be sure to tell all of you who NOT to deal with....

This is all for one days spec work then? I dont have a solution, just asking.
- liquid0
I mean it probably would take a day or two.
I don't think I could rock it out by myself. I have a few people I have for certain tasks if we did land it.
Like I know X person is good with typography, Y person is good with pshop, Z person is good with textures....blah blah.... a team..... that I know could kick ass on this.
- mrdobolina0
fuck man, that is rough. Are the other people involved just going to let you make the call? If not, what have they had to say about it?
Sorry if you already stated it above, I may have missed it.
- liquid0
yeah the other folks involved are nay on spec work. Honestly, the other team members have earned the right to say no to spec work.
I am trying right now to get them to take the lead so they could display their portfolio in full.

if they wont sign there is a reason, I'd say no. If they used your work without prior permission could you not woop them?

i would think of risk vs reward.
let's say, the project you are getting is $100k. if you can do a spec work in 1day(let's just assume your day/rate $1000/day). in this case, your reward is still 100 times more than your initial investment.
of course, if the company is rather shady, i would just say no.

If previous work and or dialogue and discussion with said client can't sell the job, then bag it ... lifetime changing jobs should rely on more than just a day of sketch work.
The client probably mostly wants the spec work from fringe freelancers and agencies to see "specialized" styles applied to their products and in the end, filter those ideas to relationships already established - basically so they can take your style to someone else and say, "this is what we had in mind"

Negative.
QBN
(Aug 4 06, 08:05)QBN has spoken. and as well ken, if this is such a big client, they either are testing designers or they are tight with their money. and if do actually become their vendor, do you think they would treat you with better respect??? really now...

I say, if they ask for spec work they have no REspecT for your work.
