I designed a flyer for my client. Handled the printing for her and stuff. All is good, she got it, i got paid. Now she's asking me for the files for the flyer on CD - in case she wants to reprint it. Question: how do I handle it? Do I just give it up? Charge her? Help!

this issue has been brought up here a few times. i think everyone agrees with 50% of the total design cost for files.
so if you got paid $500. then you should charge $250 for the files.

That sounds reasonable.

I would have to counter that saying, one would assume all the work you've done would be property of the client unless otherwise noted. So if it's a little print project, like a flyer or something I might just hand it over. If it's a web project involving a backend database talking to a server, handing server or a book of some sort, that should be handled contractually differently. but that's just in my experience.

yeah, does she mean, "can I have the file so I can do another run of flyers for this event, in case we run out?"? or does she want it editable so she can use your flyer for lots of different events?
if it's the former, I say just give her the file, how many flyers she prints doesn't effect your fee surely?

Just give her the file, its not as though its a big job!!

(Aug 3 06, 08:32)but surely if rockonski has used the standard pvn contract template (PDF), as he should have, then his client has already done this, no?

make her show you her boobies.

(Aug 3 06, 08:32)haha i'm going to start putting that in contracts. If you want source files, show me your tits.
It will then be official!

give her a flattened file that she can't edit. Then if she wan'ts changes she must speak with you and pay you for mor work.

I'd say it depends on what you want- if you just want money, charge her. But developing good client relationships is part of this game too. A little bit of leniency can go a long way in terms of repeat business. Flatten the files and give them to her.
