Done it..wouldn't recommend it...cause you get this "You know man, it looks great, but everything on that one page would really look better on that other page, and can we make the picture bigger and change all the colors to orange?"
Yeah, now you start paying me beeotch..

I give my friends discounts.
...
Who am I kidding, I tell my friends I'll give them discounts, that I'll do everything for them, and then I just bait them along meanwhile doing absolutely nothing.
I have like 5-10 sites people want me to do that I've been saying yes to for seemingly forever.

doing design jobs for free for friends is lot like giving your best buddy a free haircut. You should tell them this before they commission you for real.

Pro-bono, for friends or otherwise, are always the longest projects...
Casue there is nothing to keep the client from requesting anything they want, as much as they want. If there were a cost for each change-order, it would be a different story :)

When I tell someone I could put a site together for them in 4 months, it seems like a long time.
Then, all that paying bills and having a life stuff gets in the way.

true dat.
i'm doing a site for a friend for dirt fucking cheap. it would have normally been at least 5-6 grand, but i'm doing it for a fucking steal. the 5th of this month will be a full year since i started the project.
now it's gotten to be by far one of my worst designs, and coding nightmares. i've been cutting so many corners just to get this shit done it will never go in my portfolio, and i'll never own up to doing it. it should have been a 2 month project and actually had the potential of being very cool.
now i hate it, and i hate her.
i couldn't even bring myself to invite her to my wedding.
ha.

if you have to do it... nail them on lunch dinner or all drink on him one night... it is only fair

Should the rules for asking a friend to design something be the same as when you ask a friend to help you move?
-you have buy them beer (at least, or some equivelent)
-you can't ask them to do anything for at least 2 years.

i work for large cash amounts. nothing less.
business is separate from friendship!!!

hahahaha, i love that updated timeline.

I swore that off this year. So far it's working out well because i have to hold myself to reasonable deadlines. i don't end up hating projects by the time they are done. I have yet to encounter any problems keeping the work/friendship balance level.

For some reason, I'm not good at saying, "NO!" So, I just told all my friends that I couldn't be friends with them any more.

I have done tons of work for friends, but it's always favor based and I make sure to get my favor first.

I do things for friends sometimes, some work out better than others. I make sure to tell them that I will work on it when I have the time and that paying clients come first.

Yeah, it always ends up being a pain in the ass.
But how about when your friend, who is doing a 'media' course asks for a hand finishing off an end of year project, then after designing and building the template (based around the illegible scrawls that were in his notebook), they went on a two day bender and asked for help at 8 o'clock on the morning it had to be handed in.
You sir, are a cock!

i won't even do things for friends for my normal rate. because they are friends they feel they can walk all over you.
never mix money and friends, or you will loose friends.
also pro-bono work in general can suck my dick.
