I researched this to death recently when we decided to by an HDTY.
Some points I found out include:
1. 42"+ plasma and lcd cost close to the same if you shop around
2. plasma runs hotter surface temp than lcd
3. plasma is much more comfortable image to view in a dimly lit room
4. lcd is best for a room that gets a lot of daylight
5. plasma has greatest viewing angle (if you see the screen, you can see the picture). LCD is pretty good for most situations.
6. LCD are lighter if you're hanging it on the wall (unless there are heavy speakers attached)
7. Plasma "burn in" has pretty much been eliminated on new TV's.
8. LCD is really nice to use a computer monitor
9. Plasma TV's are delicate to move and must always remain verticle
10. There are a handfull of LCD manufacturers and even fewer Plasma manufacturers in the world. Many TV's buy screens from the same source and brand them as they see fit.
I purchased a 40" Samsung LCD HDTV because our living room has a lot of windows and the LCD was best for viewing in a bright room.
If you're looking at Plasma, check out what Marantz offers.

here's a good article to get you started:

I went with plasma because of price, and its still a better picture. The days of plasma burnout are over for the most part...
Panasonic and pioneer tend to make the best plasmas, but it depends on which size you are looking for. Pioneer will always be more expensive, but for good reason...
good luck!
by the way, I have the 50" Panasonic plasma and i f'n love it!!!!!

i can say thou that pioneer was the BEST. even better looking then sony. it was like 3400.
still no idea what i will do, i just can not make up my mind.

All the research you'll need
Best info I got there was to pick your tv on features you desire. Not picture.Because they can all be calibrated to look correct according to standards. It might cost some cash, but worth it. At least buy a calibration dvd and diY

Sony 40"LCD.
I bought it because it hooks-up as a very sharp computer monitor. Way sharper than plasma. It rocks.

I just put a looped flash presentation on the company hall plasma tv ten minutes ago - just some decoration for the visitors. For months it was showing bloomberg app. Now the bloomberg interface is burnt in so strong not only you can read the nav buttons text, but also tell colours they had. It's a sony, I guess an older model.
