I researched this to death recently when we decided to by an HDTY.
Some points I found out include:
1. 42"+ plasma and lcd cost close to the same if you shop around
2. plasma runs hotter surface temp than lcd
3. plasma is much more comfortable image to view in a dimly lit room
4. lcd is best for a room that gets a lot of daylight
5. plasma has greatest viewing angle (if you see the screen, you can see the picture). LCD is pretty good for most situations.
6. LCD are lighter if you're hanging it on the wall (unless there are heavy speakers attached)
7. Plasma "burn in" has pretty much been eliminated on new TV's.
8. LCD is really nice to use a computer monitor
9. Plasma TV's are delicate to move and must always remain verticle
10. There are a handfull of LCD manufacturers and even fewer Plasma manufacturers in the world. Many TV's buy screens from the same source and brand them as they see fit.
I purchased a 40" Samsung LCD HDTV because our living room has a lot of windows and the LCD was best for viewing in a bright room.
If you're looking at Plasma, check out what Marantz offers.
