Theres an area of Oak Park where you can take a tour of all these Frank Lloyd Wright residential homes he designed. His studio/home is still there and you can tour that as well. Never gets too crowded and you don't have to pay for the neighborhood tour, you can just grab a map and walk around on your own. Its great to check out if the weather is nice and you want to get away from the crowds, by far my favorite attraction in chicago.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I had heard of the Robie House but not the rest of it. I just read that the Robie house is "considered one of the most important buildings in the history of American architecture". Interesting.
Dobs, am I right that Milwaukee is not as fun for kids and a lot of the attractions consist of eating and drinking. That is the impression I got from reading about it. Do you know anything out of the ordinary going on there next weekend?

i live out in the burbs but frequently use priceline to get great hotel prices downtown. i get 4 star hotels for around $60 a night. of course, it might be the height of touristy season, but give it a shot. it's worked for me every time i've tried it, name your own price and start low.

nah, we have an amazing world class zoo, http://www.milwaukeezoo.org/ better than most cities. 2 dope museums, including the calatrava brise soleil http://www.mam.org
http://www.mpm.org/German Fest is next weekend also, http://www.germanfest.com/ I take my nephew to it every year. he is 11. we have a pretty wicked lakefront too. no beaches to speak of though. free trolleys that take you all around downtown and the east side (trendier neighborhood) lots of sidewalk cafe's and restaurants.
A day trip to milwaukee would be very cool with kids. let me know if you have any other questions.
My city hasd changed massively in the past 5-10 years.

Cool, thanks. My wife wants to go to some places in Wisconsin anyway so that may be an option.
My kids only care about going to the jelly bean factory. There are also some native mounds near there or something.
I was wondering if the museums there were cool.
Do you recommend staying downtown there too? I am thinking it could be a chaeper alternative to Chicago.
This is the list I have been compiling on Milwaukee so far.
Cuban restaurant, Cubanitas
John Hawk's pub and berger on the Milwaukee River.
Rock Bottom restaurant and brewery
Wonderbar on Vliet Street
Historic Third Ward
Mama Mia's at 79th St
new Brazilian churrasqueria named "Sabor".
walk the riverwalk and pub hop
downtown brew pubs - Ale House, Rock Bottom, and Water Street Brewery,
German Meal at Karl Ratzch's or Maders
Renaissance book store downtown on Plankington.
Summerfest grounds: Irishfest, Germanfest, Festa Italiana.

(Jul 21 06, 11:49)YES! Amazing! I had a lot of fun at that museum. They have a great Egyptian exibit. Hell, all the exhibits there are super cool. As a bonus point you get to park next to Soldiers Field and see how they made it look like a giant space ship landed on what was an iconic stadium.

Cubanitas is pretty good, there is a greek joint over there called Ouzo that is good as well. An asian sake bar and restaurant called Saketumi and a steak place called Carnevor. All great restaurants.
I hear Sabor is fantastic and only a few blocks away.
Water Street Brewery is kinda lame, The Alehouse is a better spot. On Old World 3rd street is Mader's and Hoffbrau German Bier Hall, my favorite pub in the city.
The Calatrava sculpture at the Art Museum is excellent. Also we have The Eisner Advertising Museum that is pretty sweet.
Boat Rides on The Iroquois
That boat would be great if you have kids with and if you dont, they have a cheap bar on the boat.
Staying downtown is pretty cheap, Hotel Metro is judged by the new york times as our best hotel. But there are all of your chain hotels right downtown too.

Is there any place to avoid downtown MKE or is it relatively safe?
- mrdobolina0
stay east of 8th street, Marquette University is past 11th and there are massive amounts of panhandlers and is close to a lot of tore up neighborhoods. There really isnt much to do up that way anyway. If you stay right downtown you will be in good shape.
